🔆 Transforming Nursing Education: High Point University School of Nursing Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month with Innovative Experiential Mental Health Nursing Simulation! 🔆As professors and students at High Point University School of Nursing recognize May as Mental Health Awareness Month, our junior-level nursing students engaged in a unique and impactful Experiential Bipolar I Disorder Simulation Experience. This hands-on learning opportunity was spearheaded by Dr. Davis-Dick, DNP, PMH-BC, Assistant Professor of Mental Health Nursing, Dr. Phelps, DNP, MSN, RN, CNEcl, CHSE, Assistant Professor and Simulation Director, and Dr. Smoot, DNP, MSN-Ed, RN, CMSRN, CHRN, Assistant Professor. 🎓🧠We were thrilled to have our dynamic simulation actors, Gabby Eagle, MS, and Annie Miya, MS, NCC, HPU Panther Recovery, who brought this experience to life. Both hold graduate degrees/certifications with extensive experience in behavioral health. 🌟👏Dr. Davis-Dick and Dr. Phelps collaborated to create an empathy-focused, evidence-based Bipolar I Disorder patient simulation in our state-of-the-art High Point University School of Nursing Simulation Center. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), bipolar disorder affects an estimated 2.8% of US adults in a given year. This simulation allowed our students to gain invaluable experience by working in nursing teams to admit and care for a patient on an adult psychiatric inpatient unit, using their clinical and critical judgment skills to handle complex mental health assessments. 🏥📚Through the support of Dr. Smoot, our nursing students participated in an interdisciplinary team and communicated with psychiatrists to navigate the patient's needs. This simulation assessed students' abilities to support high-acuity mental health patients using concepts learned in both didactic and clinical settings. 💬📝Our mental health didactic course provided rich instruction and featured robust guest lectures from renowned experts, including Anthony Gurley, author of "Deadly Dilemma," Dr. Crystal Montague, DNP, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, visionary owner of Mindful Innovations clinic, and Jason Berry, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, an expert in advanced practice psychiatric and family nursing. Early in the semester, Katie Van Dorsten, M.S., LCMHCA, NCC, HPU Clinical Counselor, along with Gabby Eagle and Annie Miya, provided QPR Suicide Prevention Training, equipping our nursing students with crucial skills and certification in suicide prevention. Additionally, the High Point University Counseling Center offered Substance Use-Recovery and Trauma-Informed Care Trainings, further enriching our nursing students' knowledge and preparedness for practice. 🧠🔗Lastly, we express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Racquel Ingram, PhD, RN, Founding Dean of the High Point University School of Nursing, for her unwavering support of rich experiential learning opportunities for our nursing students. 🌟👏 Go HPU Future Nurses!
