Is it worth investing in S&P 500 ETF?
The average yearly total return of the S&P 500 is 12.7% over the past 10 years. Keep in mind: That average includes years in which the S&P was down, such as 2018 and 2022. That average also includes reinvested dividends. Without dividends, the average yearly return over the past decade is just 10.6%.
The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO -0.84%) is a top choice for most index fund investors. Even Warren Buffett recommends it above any other investment. There's a good reason for that. Its low expense ratio and tight index tracking make it a top choice for anyone looking to match the returns of the S&P 500.
According to our calculations, a $1000 investment made in February 2014 would be worth $5,971.20, or a gain of 497.12%, as of February 5, 2024, and this return excludes dividends but includes price increases. Compare this to the S&P 500's rally of 178.17% and gold's return of 55.50% over the same time frame.
Choosing your investments
Investing in an S&P 500 fund can instantly diversify your portfolio and is generally considered less risky. S&P 500 index funds or ETFs will track the performance of the S&P 500, which means when the S&P 500 does well, your investment will, too. (The opposite is also true, of course.)
SPY, VOO and IVV are among the most popular S&P 500 ETFs. These three S&P 500 ETFs are quite similar, but may sometimes diverge in terms of costs or daily returns. Investors generally only need one S&P 500 ETF.
In 1980, had you invested a mere $1,000 in what went on to become the top-performing stock of S&P 500, then you would be sitting on a cool $1.2 million today.
Meanwhile, if you only invest in S&P 500 ETFs, you won't beat the broad market. Rather, you can expect your portfolio's performance to be in line with that of the broad market. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. See, over the past 50 years, the S&P 500 has delivered an average annual 10% return.
Discount Rate | Present Value | Future Value |
---|---|---|
17% | $1,000 | $23,105.60 |
18% | $1,000 | $27,393.03 |
19% | $1,000 | $32,429.42 |
20% | $1,000 | $38,337.60 |
The S&P 500 is all US-domiciled companies that over the last ~40 years have accounted for ~50% of all global stocks. By just owning the S&P 500 you miss out on almost half of the global opportunity set which is another ~10,000 public companies.
The result is the number of years, approximately, it'll take for your money to double. For example, if an investment scheme promises an 8% annual compounded rate of return, it will take approximately nine years (72 / 8 = 9) to double the invested money.
Why is ETF not a good investment?
ETFs are subject to market fluctuation and the risks of their underlying investments. ETFs are subject to management fees and other expenses. Unlike mutual funds, ETF shares are bought and sold at market price, which may be higher or lower than their NAV, and are not individually redeemed from the fund.
Theoretically, for exotic ETFs, yes — but as a practical matter highly unlikely. And for broad market ETFs that track something like the S&P 500 Index the probability of going to zero is, well, about zero. Every stock in the index would have to go to zero.
So, if you are looking to own a more diversified basket of stocks, the S&P 500 will be the right fit for you. However, those who are comfortable with the slightly higher risk for the extra returns that investing in Nasdaq 100 based fund might generate will be better off with Nasdaq 100.
Assuming an average annual return rate of about 10% (a typical historical average), a $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 could potentially grow to approximately $25,937 over 10 years.
Experts agree that for most personal investors, a portfolio comprising 5 to 10 ETFs is perfect in terms of diversification.
For most ETFs, selling after less than a year is taxed as a short-term capital gain. ETFs held for longer than a year are taxed as long-term gains. If you sell an ETF, and buy the same (or a substantially similar) ETF after less than 30 days, you may be subject to the wash sale rule.
As you will see, the future value of $40,000 over 20 years can range from $59,437.90 to $7,601,985.51.
The S&P 500 (^GSPC 0.87%) has been reaching new heights, soaring by a whopping 41% from its lowest point in October 2022. This can be an exciting time for investors, many of whom have watched their portfolios plummet in value over the past several years.
One way to become a millionaire
Over its history, the S&P 500 has generated an average annual return of 9%, including re-invested dividends. At that rate, even a middle-class income is enough to become a millionaire over time. $500 a month, for example, is less than 10% of the median U.S. household's monthly income.
- 10-year return: 24.37%
- Assets under management: $10.9B.
- Expense ratio: 0.35%
- As of date: November 30, 2023.
How often should you invest in S&P 500?
A simple strategy for investing in the S&P 500 is to buy a set dollar amount each week or month and hold it for the long term. This is known as dollar-cost averaging. Dollar-cost averaging is a strategy where you divide the total amount you want to invest across periodic purchases of the target asset.
Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO)
Expense ratio: 0.03 percent. That means every $10,000 invested would cost $3 annually. Who is it good for?: Great for investors looking for a broadly diversified index fund at a low cost to serve as a core holding in their portfolio.
Over the years, that money can really add up: If you kept that money in a retirement account over 30 years and earned that average 6% return, for example, your $10,000 would grow to more than $57,000. In reality, investment returns will vary year to year and even day to day.
Discount Rate | Present Value | Future Value |
---|---|---|
2% | $100 | $121.90 |
3% | $100 | $134.39 |
4% | $100 | $148.02 |
5% | $100 | $162.89 |
The table below shows the present value (PV) of $3,000 in 20 years for interest rates from 2% to 30%. As you will see, the future value of $3,000 over 20 years can range from $4,457.84 to $570,148.91.
