The far right's election gains rattle EU's traditional powers, leading Macron to call snap polls

  • By RAF CASERT, LORNE COOK and SAMUEL PETREQUIN - Associated Press

Far-right parties rattled the traditional powers in the European Union with major gains in parliamentary seats, dealing an especially humiliating defeat to French President Emmanuel Macron, who called snap legislative elections. Some ballots in the vote for the European Parliament were still being counted Monday, but the outcome showed the 27-nation bloc’s parliament membership has clearly shifted to the right. The Christian Democrats of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remained by far the biggest group and de facto brokers of the ever-expanding powers of the legislature. But the surge by nationalist and populist parties will make it much harder for the assembly to approve legislation on issues ranging from climate change to agriculture policy.

A look at the prospects for a cease-fire deal after Israel rescued 4 hostages from Hamas captivity

  • By TIA GOLDENBERG - Associated Press

Israel’s dramatic rescue of four hostages from inside the Gaza Strip comes at a sensitive time in the 8-month-old war, as Israel and Hamas weigh an American-backed proposal for a cease-fire and the release of the remaining captives. Both sides face renewed pressure to make a deal: For Israel, the complex rescue is unlikely to be replicated on a scale needed to bring back scores of remaining hostages. Hamas now has four fewer bargaining chips. But they could also dig in, as they repeatedly have over months of indirect negotiations mediated by the United States, Qatar and Egypt.

What's Hajj, the Islamic pilgrimage, and why is it significant for Muslims?

  • By MARIAM FAM - Associated Press

Once a year, Muslims coming to Saudi Arabia unite in a series of religious rituals and acts of worship as they perform Hajj, one of the pillars of Islam. As they fulfill a religious obligation, they immerse themselves in what can be a profound spiritual experience of a lifetime and a chance to seek God's forgiveness and the erasure of past sins. For the pilgrims, Hajj is also seen as an opportunity to grow closer to God and to walk in the footsteps of prophets. Hajj unites Muslims of diverse races, ethnicities, languages and economic classes in performing rituals together.

Stock market today: Asian markets mixed following hotter-than-expected US jobs report

  • By ZIMO ZHONG - Associated Press

Asian markets are mixed in muted trading after a jobs report released Friday was hotter then expected. The euro sank after far-right parties made major gains in parliamentary elections Sunday, leading French President Emmanuel Macron to announce Sunday he was dissolving the parliament and calling a snap election. U.S. futures and oil prices rose. The jobs report suggests markets may have to wait even longer for interest rate cuts. The S&P 500 ended 0.1% lower Friday. The Dow industrials fell 0.2% and the Nasdaq composite shed 0.2%. GameStop, the struggling video game retailer behind the meme stock craze, plunged 39% after reporting another loss and saying it will sell up to 75 million more shares.

A huge audience. India, China's World Cup qualifying hopes are on the line in Asia

  • By JOHN DUERDEN - Associated Press

The World Cup aspirations of India and China are on the line this week when a defeat could mean elimination from qualifying in Asia. A big chunk of the world’s population will be following Tuesday's results with interest. If China loses to South Korea in Seoul in the last game of the second round of qualification then it could lose second place in Group C to Thailand. Only the top two teams in each of the nine groups progress to the third stage of Asian qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Australia PM urges activists to 'turn the heat down' after US Consulate vandalized over Gaza war

  • AP

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged activists on both sides of the Israel-Palestinian debate to “turn the heat down” after the U.S. Consulate in Sydney was vandalized. CCTV footage showed a person wearing a dark hoodie using a small sledgehammer to smash nine holes in the reinforced glass windows of the building in North Sydney after 3 a.m. on Monday. Two inverted red triangles, seen by many as a symbol of Palestinian resistance, were also painted on the front of the building. Albanese urged people to have “respectful political debate and discourse.” The consulate remained closed on Monday because of a public holiday in New South Wales state but plans to reopen on Tuesday.

  • AP

Nolan McCarthy doubled and scored the go-ahead run from second base on a wild pitch in the seventh inning and No. 2 seed Kentucky held on for a 3-2 victory over 15th-seeded Oregon State, sweeping the Lexington Super Regional and earning the Wildcats their first trip to the College World Series. Kentucky (45-14) finished off its first super regional championship after winning the opener 10-0 with a one-hitter on Saturday for the school’s first win in a super regional. After Dodgers take 2 of 3 games from Yankees, a World Series matchup seems possible

  • By RONALD BLUM - AP Baseball Writer

After three intense games between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers in front of sellout crowds, Oswaldo Cabrera allowed himself to think ahead. The Yankees utilityman says it crossed the team's mind that this could make for a good October matchup in the World Series. New York beat the Dodgers 6-4 to avoid a three-game sweep as Trent Grisham hit a go-ahead, three-run homer. Aaron Judge and Cabrera also homered for the Yankees, who have the American League’s best record at 46-21. Los Angeles leads the NL West at 41-26. A World Series matchup would be the 12th between the teams.

Trump will speak to a Christian group that calls for abortion to be 'eradicated entirely'

  • By MICHELLE L. PRICE and PETER SMITH - Associated Press

Donald Trump is scheduled to address a Christian group that calls for abortion to be “eradicated entirely,” as the Republican frontrunner has repeatedly taken credit for the overturning of national abortion rights but said he wants to leave the issue to the states. The former president on Monday will speak virtually at an event put on by The Danbury Institute, which is meeting in Indianapolis. The organization says on its website that it “will not rest” until abortion “is eradicated entirely.” Trump has said he’s proud of appointing Supreme Court justices who played a role in overturning Roe v. Wade and that it's “a beautiful thing” to watch the states decide the issue.

Nevada has a plan to expand electronic voting. That concerns election security experts

  • By CHRISTINA A. CASSIDY - Associated Press

Voting on reservations across the country has historically been exceedingly difficult, with tribal voters sometimes having to travel long distances to their polling place or facing barriers because they don't have a physical address. In Nevada, the state has now granted tribes a new right that advocates hope will greatly expand voting access — the ability to cast ballots electronically. But what some see as a small measure of justice to equalize voting rights for a people long disenfranchised raises security concerns for others, with potential implications far beyond Nevada's 28 tribal communities.

Republican contenders for Mitt Romney’s open US Senate seat face off in Utah debate

  • By HANNAH SCHOENBAUM - Associated Press

Four Utah Republicans battling to win the seat of retiring U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney are set to face off in a primary debate. U.S. Rep. John Curtis is considered the favorite in the June 25 primary. But a suburban mayor named Trent Staggs won the convention after former President Donald Trump endorsed him. The race is expected to test Trump's influence in a red state that's been hesitant to embrace him. Former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson and businessman Jason Walton are also seeking the position and will participate in the Monday evening debate. Challengers for two of the state's four congressional seats will debate earlier in the day.

What to know about Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier's first hearing in more than a decade

  • By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH and JACK DURA - Associated Press

Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier has spent most of his life in prison since being convicted in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents in South Dakota. Peltier has a parole hearing Monday at a federal prison in Florida. At 79, his health is failing. His attorney says that if this parole request is denied, it might be a decade or more before it is considered again. Supporters have long argued that he was wrongly convicted and say this may be his last chance at freedom. The FBI and former agents dispute that he was wrongly convicted and are fighting parole.

Hunter Biden's gun trial enters its final stretch after deeply personal testimony about his drug use

  • By CLAUDIA LAUER, MICHAEL KUNZELMAN, RANDALL CHASE and ALANNA DURKIN RICHER - Associated Press

The criminal trial of President Joe Biden’s son is heading into its final stretch as the defense tries to chip away at the prosecutors' case laying bare some of the darkest moments of Hunter Biden’s drug-fueled past. Hunter Biden’s lawyers could call at least one more witness when the case resumes Monday in Delaware’s federal court. It's the first of two trials he’s facing in the midst of his father’s re-election campaign. Hunter Biden is charged with three felonies stemming from the October 2018 purchase of a gun he had for about 11 days. Prosecutors say he lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.

Lewiston survivors consider looming election as gun control comes to forefront after mass shooting

  • By PATRICK WHITTLE - Associated Press

Voters in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District will consider the political future of three-term Rep. Jared Golden in one of the nation’s most closely watched congressional elections. Golden is a Democrat with a history of supporting gun rights who has long bucked his party on the issue. Golden, a Marine veteran of two wars, has shifted on the issue of guns since the Lewiston mass shootings and now supports an assault weapons ban. The shootings killed 18 people and wounded others in October. Golden is hoping for a fourth term and will face the winner of a Republican primary scheduled for Tuesday.

Martha's Vineyard is about to run out of pot. That's led to a lawsuit and a scramble by regulators

  • By NICK PERRY - Associated Press

Martha's Vineyard is about to run out of pot. One dispensary is already out entirely and the other is selling its remaining supplies. The problem boils down to location. Although Massachusetts voters opted to legalize marijuana more than seven years ago, the state’s Cannabis Control Commission has taken the position that transporting pot across the ocean — whether by boat or plane — risks running afoul of federal laws. The conundrum led Geoff Rose, who owns the Island Time dispensary, to file a lawsuit last month against the commission, which now says that finding a solution to the island’s pot problem is a top priority. Commissioners visited Martha’s Vineyard on Thursday to hear directly from affected residents.

Essentials including fuel, cooking oil and rice are heavily subsidized in Malaysia which has strained national finances for years.

Blinken returns to Mideast as Israel-Hamas cease-fire proposal hangs in balance after hostage rescue

  • By MATTHEW LEE - AP Diplomatic Writer

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is returning to the Middle East as a proposed Israel-Hamas cease-fire deal hangs in the balance following the dramatic rescue of four Israeli hostages in Gaza. With no firm response yet from Hamas to the proposal they received 10 days ago, Blinken on Monday starts his eighth urgent diplomatic mission to the region since the conflict began in October. He will meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo first before traveling on to Israel, Jordan and Qatar. While he and other U.S. officials have praised the hostage rescue, the operation resulted in the deaths of a large number of civilians that may complicate the ceasefire push.

Japan's economy is shrinking, although slightly less than previously thought

  • By YURI KAGEYAMA - AP Business Writer

The Japanese economy shrank at an annual rate of 1.8% in the first quarter of this year. That's according to revised government data and was slightly better than the initial estimate of a 2.0% contraction. The revision reported Monday was due to private sector investments, at minus 0.4%, up from the previous minus 0.5%. Seasonally adjusted real gross domestic product, or GDP, a measure of the value of a nation’s products and services, remained in negative territory. Quarter-to-quarter, the economy slipped 0.5% in January-March. The annual rate measures what would have happened if the quarterly rate lasted a year.

Celtics call Payton Pritchard's desperation 3-pointer the 'play of the game' in Game 2

  • By TIM REYNOLDS - AP Basketball Writer

Payton Pritchard doesn’t care much about what his line in the stat sheet looks like, which is one of the many things that endears him to Joe Mazzulla and the Boston Celtics. He was sent into Game 2 of the NBA Finals with 3.3 seconds remaining in the third quarter, with one mission: Take a desperation 3-pointer before time expires. Pritchard takes them happily. A 34-footer, from the Finals logo just inside the midcourt stripe, bounced off the backboard and in for a nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter. They were Pritchard’s only three points of Game 2, and they were an unforgettable part of Boston’s 105-98 win over the Dallas Mavericks.
