Research Guides: Historical Market & Stock Data: Websites (2024)
The following websites have been selected by the librarians at Walker Management Library as being choice sources of Historical Market & Stock Data information on the World Wide Web:
Click on Historical Prices in the company profile. Stock prices (daily, weekly, monthly) and dividends available going back 20-30 years. Download into Excel. Try Yahoo's new charting for more access and control.
Designed to assist investors with market and investment research, both through the market data information provided as well as through the FINRA Investor Education material and tools.
Both historical and up-to-the-minute price quotes can be found using an Internet-connected device and one of several websites or apps. Investopedia has its own handy tools for obtaining historical price quotes as well.
NASDAQ allows you to download a CSV file that extends only 10 years into the past. Naturally, being a high-profile stock, more extensive data can be found on the web. For instance, Kaggle provides a CSV file of Apple Stock Prices from 1980-2021.
You can begin with a quick internet search on the company's name. If this doesn't turn up any information, you may consult the corporate registry where the company was registered. You will find this information on the stock certificate, it will usually state “Incorporated under the laws of…”.
1. Alpha Vantage. Alpha Vantage offers a comprehensive Financial Stock Market API, providing developers with access to a diverse range of financial data. One of its unique points is the availability of a free tier that allows developers to access essential market data without a subscription.
A stock API is an interface and allows developers to access real-time data, stock data or ETF data, news, and other relevant financial data. Using stock APIs, developers can build financial applications and services that can access this data and integrate it with their own applications.
When the Download Link is Missing. For some symbols, the Download Data link is missing and the CSV file is unavailable. This is most likely caused by licensing terms between Yahoo and the particular stock exchange or index provider.
For example, view the historical section at Marketwatch or Nasdaq. It's generally acceptable to take the lowest and highest price from a given day and average them to arrive at a cost. It's also acceptable to use the closing price on the day of purchase.
Trade Associations & Trade Magazines/Journals can be excellent sources of market share data. Trade Associations often collect data on industry growth trends, sales figures, product developments, shipments and market share rankings. Try using the resources of an association's web site.
