This panel will explore transformations in Orthodox Christian movements in the 20th century. The relationship between political ideologies, state systems and the agency of majority Orthodox Churches across Eastern and South Eastern Europe is an enduring topic of academic investigation. Less well explored and understood are the dynamics of change within renewal movements, their scope for agency and the repertoire of religious and spiritual resources deployed by movements that arose from within an Orthodox Christian milieu. In a region arguably defined by its experience of authoritarian and totalitarianism state systems and of changing border and state jurisdictions, the papers in this panel situate religious renewal within the context of political, social and economic dislocations and relocations addressing the dialectical relationship between religious renewal and regulation and control by the state and Church hierarchy. Themes explored include the significance and role of charismatic leaders, women’s agency, discourses on morality and materiality, new religious practices and rituals and similarities across Orthodox Christian Movements. Papers will explore emergence, development and transformation of movements from the beginning of the 20th century until the end of the Communist period, tracing different phases and changes in different socio-political contexts.

'Gender and Religion is a brief introductory booklet for you to facilitate your understanding of the basic concepts and to give you details of other readings for exploring more about the topics covered in nine units (chapters). The primary goal of this course is to familiarize you with key topics, perspectives, issues, questions, and debates on religion found within feminist scholarship. In this course, we will consider questions like what is meant by gender and religion. Why do we have to study gender and religion and what are various important topics that are least discussed pertaining to religious texts, and scriptures? It also provides an overview of how various images of the divine are found across religions. It throws light on some of the most known religions and the issues of gender inequality found in their texts. It captures the discussions on the issues of sex celibacy and chastity, and South African religions also. In this way, the present course provides an analytical understanding of some major feminist concerns on religion and religious imagination. Considering the feminist approaches to the religious experiences of women, this course would also study the distinction between the sacred and the profane as being a distinction between male and female activities.

Artificial Intelligence and Spirituality: Reconsider Spirituality, Technoscience, and the Modern World

The original paper investigates the emergence of AI research as a distinctive phenomenon of spirituality, in particular the evident reliance of 1st generation AI scientists on concepts of belief and transcendental, spiritual concepts of being. Although AI scientists and theorists quite often overtly disavow the spiritual element of this configuration, this element is nonetheless evident in both the justifications and meanings ascribed to AI research and in the operational technologies. In this sense, all of the above mentioned elements converge in the work (technical and conceptual) of AI scientists, suggesting a type of spiritual culture in the modern world. In sum, a critical analysis of AI from this perspective will offer a novel way to value modern practice and phenomenon and provide a unique perspective on broader research values in religious studies. I wish also to retain the more specific orientation regarding spirituality and modernity evident in the work of religious studies scholars; therefore the intended outcome of my own research would be to contribute both concrete empirical data and a critical analysis of this data that illuminates the persistence and diversity of religious experience in the present. Thus, by simultaneously contributing to a better understanding of how the study of emergent spiritualities and religious movements cannot be limited to secularized categories, frameworks, and taxonomies that would posit humanistic science as a domain entirely distinct from the religious, I am seeking to provide some illumination as to the nature of spirituality in contemporary society.

With special focus on the agents of religious innovation the panel aims at exploring the dynamic relationship between way of life and religious knowledge up to premodern times. Religious knowledge is strongly linked to individual and collective practices and discourses. We are especially interested in the dynamic mechanisms of innovation processes which involve both agents (founding/ charismatic figures) and their lifestyles as well as the making of canons and institutions. Therefore, our panel explores the developments of religious knowledge (e.g. ascetical, anthropological, eschatological, cosmological) against the background of the agents' way of life, and their biographical, social, historic, and intellectual environments (and vice versa). Our leading question is: On the basis of which practices and discourses is the way of life performed and how are such practices and discourses generated, and transformed, by taking up (innovative) lifestyles? To what extent are institutions involved? Do they repel or foster the innovation process?
